In general, he is very much drawn to work with illustrative and graphic elements and a monochromatic palette, featuring bold background colours. However, there are also exceptions to this rule, based on the opportunity to purchase investment pieces.
Smit’s impressive private collection boasts work by preeminent international artists including Salvador Dali, William Kentridge, Deborah Bell, and Emily Young.
One of the attractions of the Lionel Smit Studio is the opportunity to view a selection of the artist’s personal artworks, collected and collated over the past few decades.
Visitors are free to view the collection displayed in corners and nooks of our gallery walls to explore and discover the work of the visual creatives that Smit’s expert eye is drawn to.
Seeing these works juxtaposed with Smit’s own sculptures and paintings allows for exclusive insight into the mind, muses and aesthetic and intellectual points of inspiration.
