Pendulum: An exploration of duality

“Our human world is like a swinging pendulum,” muses Lionel Smit. “

There’s constant flux in our emotional and psychological inner states, even in our physical reality,” he explains with a contemplative smile. It is largely this [continuously evolving] examination of fluid, amorphous ‘states of being’ which drives the South African painter and sculptor. 

In Pendulum, Smit’s central preoccupation has been to create visual conversations between classical post-Renaissance portraiture and modern expressionism. By doing so, the artist is able to examine and give life to these inner psychological states in new, dynamic ways.  - Extract of essay by Kayang Gagiano

Lionel Smit

Lionel Smit is an international award-winning artist. One of South Africa’s most commercially successful multimedia artists, this prolific visionary is best known for his intriguing monumental portraits of women. The portraits capture visages in various cryptic guises and are executed on large-scale canvases and through bronze sculptures.

He established the Lionel Smit Studio as both a working and exhibition space in his hometown of Somerset West near Cape Town. Here he pursues his craft in all manner of media with areas dedicated to sculpture, painting, and printmaking.
